  • Gingrich to Prolong Spotlight in Campaign Suspension Event

Newt Gingrich will officially suspend his campaign for president Wednesday at 3pm, but he will not yet formally endorse Mitt Romney.

Campaign spokesman RC Hammond says the speech will focus on, " the important role citizens can play in stopping a second Obama term and helping Mitt Romney and the Republican party build a governing coalition in Washington and state capitals across the country."

Newt will mention Romney, but will not formally endorse him for a couple weeks.

Romney was one of the first people to know that Gingrich was suspending his campaign. Hammond says Romney called Gingrich shortly after the rumors started and the two talked. Romney promised to support whatever decision Gingrich made and to include him in the campaign If he decided to end his run. The two campaigns have had ongoing conversations since that phone call.

Hammond insists there was no lag between the time that Gingrich decided to suspend his campaign and pledging to support Romney. No events have been planned, but a swing through the South is pretty likely.

Newt's wife Callista and other members of the family will be at tomorrow's event will take place at the Hilton Arlington. (read more)

  • Video: Santorum's Wife, “Reluctant to Run, But it was God's Will”

Rick Santorum's wife Karen was very reluctant when her husband started thinking about running for president; but, a year and a half later, she says it was impossible to ignore "God's will."

Karen Santorum, in an interview with Fox News, said it took a very long time to make the decision, because she had originally "totally closed the door to the idea." The former senator was focused on being a father-- coaching little league and watching softball games. So, her husband asked her to start praying about it. "In the end, despite my resistance, when God asks something - you do it. And so we are on the path."

That path has been a long one.

And now, Mrs. Santorum says they are "in it for the long haul." In fact, she is looking ahead to Tampa. In an interview with Fox News, Mrs. Santorum dialed back expectations in Rick Santorum's home state, saying they are "hoping for the best" in the Pennsylvania in a few weeks. But she did point out Pennsylvania is a blue state, and "it's important to remember there were four races before the last one, that we won." She is referring to her husband's failed Senate re-election bid in 2006. (read more)

  • Puerto Rico’s Governor Confident About Statehood

Luis Fortuno/Mitt RomneyThe Governor of Puerto Rico is confident Puerto Ricans will vote to make the U.S. territory a state this fall, and despite recent comments from GOP Presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, English will not need to be made the primary language for that to happen.

As a territory, Puerto Ricans cannot vote in the general election November 6th. But, they will vote on a statehood referendum on that day. Gov. Luis Fortuno tells Fox News it will be a process but he is confident it will happen.

"It just makes sense. We have been part of the United States since 1898. Natural-born citizens since 1917. Our men and women have served in greater numbers than most states since then. And I believe that it's the right thing to do in the 21st century to allow almost 4 million American citizens to express our will and then to work with the White House and hopefully President Romney to address this issue."

All four of the GOP Presidential hopefuls would like to see Puerto Rico become a state. But it is Mitt Romney's more aggressive posture that helped him win Fortuno's endorsement. (read more)

  • Perry to join Gingrich on campaign trail

    Rick Perry (Fox News Photo)

Texas Gov. Rick Perry will campaign for Newt Gingrich for the first time on Feb. 22. Perry spokesman Ray Sullivan told Fox News Perry will be at the CNN debate in Mesa, Ariz., next week on Gingrich's behalf.

Perry endorsed Gingrich shortly after dropping out of the presidential race. He has mentioned the endorsement in interviews, but did not mention it in either of the two speeches he has delivered since suspending his campaign, including his address to CPAC last week.

The Arizona Republican Party will co-host the Arizona debate ahead of the Arizona and Michigan primaries on Feb. 28.

Perry has not planned any events with Gingrich beyond the debate.

  • Perry Plays Off Eastwood Ad, Calls for White House Game Change

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) at CPAC

Texas Gov. Rick Perry came back onto the conservative stage with a tongue in cheek take on actor Clint Eastwood's controversial "Halftime in America" Super Bowl ad.

In his second speech since dropping out of the GOP presidential race, Perry told the CPAC crowd, "If it's halftime in America, I am fearful of what the final score is going to be if we let this president start the second half as the quarterback."

Perry went on to insist the federal government has overstepped its primary role of providing security and ventured far down a path of unnecessary oversight.

Eastwood's Chrysler ad has gotten a lot of attention. In it, he says, "the country can't be knocked out with one punch ... our second half is about to begin." Since the big game, Eastwood has insisted he was sending an inspirational message, not a political one. But, Democrats claim the ad is an endorsement of President Obama's auto bailout.

For his part, Perry told CPAC, "Washington is too busy regulating our freedom to fulfill its basic responsibilities and obligations."

This wasn't Perry's only tongue-in-cheek football reference. The Texas A&M grad also joked "Aggies never lose, we just ran out of time." (read more)

  • Texas Dem Asks Perry to Foot $2M Security Bill

Texas Governor Rick Perry has no intention of paying the estimated $2.7M security costs he piled up running for President.

Democratic state congresswoman Jessica Farrar's office hand delivered the Governor a letter demanding that Perry pay back the state funds Perry she says he "squandered" during his failed presidential bid.

But Texas policy dictates the Governor's security is provided by the Department of Public Safety.

Perry spokesman Ray Sullivan insists, "The Texas Department of Public Safety is responsible for providing the Governor's security, as they have been for every governor in recent years. The security is a state police expense, and it's being treated this year as it was when George W. Bush ran for president."

The amount Farrar, an outspoken Perry opponent, uses in her letter was provided by a group called Progress Texas. It is based on a breakdown of the figures released by the Department of Public Safety that covers Perry's first months on the campaign trail. But the number is merely an estimate, because the cost of security for Perry's entire campaign stint hasn't been released yet. (read more)

  • Google: South Carolinians searching for info on Gingrich's wives

As South Carolinians head to the polls, a look at what they are searching for online shows Newt Gingrich's extramarital affairs have voters in the Palmetto State scouring the Internet for answers.

According to Google, the top four searches associated with Gingrich over the past week have related to his wives in some fashion. The most popular search word in South Carolina was his current wife's name: "Callista." Her name was followed by his second wife "Marianne" -- she is the woman who gave the controversial interview to ABC News earlier this week. The third and fourth most popular searches this week were for the words "Newt scandal" and "Newt wives."

As for Mitt Romney, the top four searches involving him are more substantive. Most South Carolinians searched for Mitt Romney's "bio." That term was followed by "Mitt South Carolina," 2012," and "Mitt platform."

Now the big question is, how will what people found in these searches factor into their vote today?

  • Reagan's Son: Gingrich Exemplifies My Father's Conservative Principles

GOP Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich's quest to solidify himself as the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney has gotten a boost from the Reagan name.

Michael Reagan, President Ronald Reagan's adopted son, has endosed the former Speaker of the House, because Gingrich, "exemplifies the conservative principles my father championed: strong national defense, lower taxes and smaller government."

"Newt understands that we must reject and fundamentally change the course that Barack Obama has set for America. Newt is our only chance in 2012 to contrast a Reagan conservative with Obama's European styled socialism," Reagan wrote in a statement.

Reagan describes Gingrich as having changed Washington in the 90's with his Contract with America, and the ability to do that again now.

During the Iowa Caucuses, Gingrich also secured the support of Art Laffer, the man commonly referred to as the godfather of supply-side economics. (read more)

  • Palin Defends Gingrich & Calls Media “Dumbarses”

Sarah Palin is coming to Newt Gingrich's defense and blaming the media for covering the GOP hopeful's marital affairs.

Hours before the CNN debate, the former vice presidential candidate went on Sean Hannity's radio show and told him she calls the media "dumbarses" for focusing on this scandal days before the South Carolina primary. Palin says the negative coverage will only make Gingrich more popular.

"They, thinking that by trotting out this old Gingrich divorce interview that's old news-- and it does feature a disgruntled ex, claiming that it would destroy a campaign. All this does, Sean, is incentivize conservatives and independents who are so sick of the politics of personal destruction, because it's played so selectively by the media, that their target, in this case Newt, he's now going to soar even more. Because we know the game now, and we just won't put up with it. Good call, media," said Palin.

Palin has not endorsed a candidate. But earlier this week, she told Hannity that she would vote for Newt if she were a South Carolinian.
